This article reported the number of divorces in Singapore to increase over the years, also with an increasing number of them turn acrimonious. As such, the Family Justice Courts reacted by setting up a pilot project for divorce lawyers in Singapore to be trained as parenting coordinators, where they were taught techniques on conflict management for couples in areas of psychology. This was done in the hope that divorce lawyers trained as parenting coordinators could assist parents to cooperate and resolve children’s issues in areas such as access arrangements provided in court orders.
In the article, our firm’s head lawyer Ms Gloria James-Civetta who had undergone the parenting coordination training stated that “The parenting coordination lawyer will have the opportunity to sit down with the parents, come up with the proper parenting plan, and listen to what he or she has to say”. She additionally highlighted in the article, the importance of parents’ focus on child issues, and how it was critical to foster parent-child relationships during divorces.
Engagement of Parenting Coordinators
Parenting coordinator lawyers are usually appointed in high-conflict cases where either parent attempts to alienate a child from the other parents. There are multiple benefits in engaging a parenting coordinator, such as the reduction of legal fees, the promotion of a healthier family environment for children, the reduction of detrimental effects of a divorce on children, and the reduction of the amount of time spent in court during divorce proceedings.
