Woman Fined $1,000 for Caning Son
A woman had been helping her son with revision when she lost her cool. When he was unable to answer the questions given, she caned him all over his body. During the incident the cane also hit his left cheek, resulting in a cut.
She pleaded guilty on Friday to causing hurt to her son by caning him all over the body and was fined $1000.
Her son, who has been staying at Gracehaven since that incident and will return to his parents only in December.
Defense Counsel, Ms Gloria James, said in mitigation that her client was an outstanding mother and had done what any mother would do, though she had acted beyond her duty in disciplining her child in this case.
Citing reports from the staff at Gracehaven, she said that her client had been receptive to counselling and advice on parenting, anger management and lowering her expectations of her son.
